Furniture

I've been slowly unpacking and adding furniture to the condo; 'slowly' because I'm both lazy and tired from sitting around doing nothing all day. Anyway, today it was the desk and coffee table.

My desk. I've been adding more clutter to it since I took this picture. And yes, that is one of my dining room chairs.

The couch and coffee table. And yes, that's a giant pile of flattened moving boxes in the corner. I wish I knew someone who was moving out so I could get rid of them, instead of just sneaking them to the trash/recycling room on the floor and hoping that nobody notices (I have to imagine that my neighbors are getting pissed at the extensive number of flattened cardboard boxes I've been dropping off...).

So, I still need to buy rugs (I found some at Target that I like) and assemble the entertainment center, but I might wait until I can buy the TV stand to do that.

Tomorrow, ridiculously early report time. Fun, fun. At least there won't be much traffic at 4:30 in the morning.

Updated condo pics

Okay, I've been told that my non-updating of the blog has to end and I need to get the updated pics of the condo up, so here they are:

Kitchen. Just excuse all the clutter.

Another shot of the kitchen, with even more clutter. It's cleaner now (and there isn't any ice cream on the counter... at least, I hope not, since I haven't been there for almost two weeks).

Living room. The entertainment center/tv will go on that dark green wall.

Dining area, complete with Ikea furniture (and my Hiram College Nalgene bottle)

Bathroom. Yes, I know, you can't see much of the color in this shot, but it's pretty hard to get a decent picture of a bathroom.

Bedroom. Much better without the maroon.

Another shot of the bedroom (and Ikea bed).
That's all I have for now. When I get living room furniture, I'll get more pictures up (it just might take me awhile).

Condo!

Yes, I know it's been over a week since my last post, but I've been busy :) After finishing up my sub-i on Friday, Adrienne and I loaded up the car and drove down to southern Indiana. We ran the Derby Mini-Marathon in Louisville, KY on Saturday (miserable race; it was very, very hot, and we were not ready for that kind of weather!). Then on Sunday, she drove me to the Louisville airport and I took off for DC. I stayed with one of my Army friends on Sunday, and then on Monday, I became a homeowner! I now officially own an 800 sq ft condo in Rockville, MD (and am officially poor--I can't wait for those active duty paychecks to start coming in!)

I promised pictures way back when, so here they come:

This is the kitchen (obviously). Don't you just love the gold walls? :) Other than that (which will be gone after today), I love the kitchen--granite countertops, nice cabinets (although a bit tall...), and new Maytag appliances.

Here's the living room. Not the best depiction of the gold walls (that'll be the next picture), but pretty decent shot of the large picture window.

And here are the infamous gold walls. Yes, that's on every wall of the living room, kitchen, and bathroom. It's getting painted today.

The bedroom. The maroon is going to be gone, too (apparently, the seller also had a lot of Chief spirit...)

And the bathroom. The gold isn't as obnoxious in here, but it's going to be replaced by a greenish (Contemplation is the name of the Behr color).
So that's the condo! I'll post more pictures of the progress as it's being painted and furnished.

My DC housing search

Well, I realized the other night that I hadn't been writing about my DC condo search, so I figured I should fill you in.

My parents and I arrived in DC on Tuesday night. Dad had his meetings with various people on Capitol Hill, and Mom and I had an appointment to meet with the realtor on Wednesday morning. So we hopped on the Metro and headed out to Bethesda and met with the realtor. On Wednesday, she took us to various places in Rockville, Bethesda, and Chevy Chase, all fairly close to National Naval Medical Center (Bethesda), the future site of Walter Reed National Medical Center at Bethesda (combination of Walter Reed Army Medical Center and National Naval Medical Center, scheduled to occur in 2011). There were a few that looked really good on the inside, but looked like old apartments on the outside, so I wasn't too thrilled with those. Then there were a couple of high-rises, which I liked a lot better.

Anyway, on day two, we saw some more places in Silver Spring (closer to Walter Reed), and while the units themselves were nice, they were all in the same community, which was a children-and-dog type area--not really what I'm looking for. So we made plans to go back to one of the highrises in Rockville (2 metro stops from NNMC and USUHS, where I'll be spending my second year of residency). Friday I made an offer and filled out all sorts of contracts, so hopefully we'll be finding out soon if the offer was accepted.

Yesterday we met up with Melanie and went on a tour of the new Visitor's Center at the Capitol, then went on to the Newseum and spent some time wandering around there. Quite an interesting place. I'd recommend it if you're in DC with a few hours that you can dedicate to museum walking.

Anyway, here's a picture of the building where I made an offer. Sorry, I don't have any pictures of the unit (which would probably be entertaining, considering the bright gold that is currently on the walls).
